OHIO CHORO CLUB PERFORMS
Saturday May 31, 2008 Ohio Choro Club (OCC) began in 2007 after Eric Murray and Jason Little returned to Ohio from a music-study trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They fell in love with the music and now play a bunch of choro classics as well as some choice bossa nova favorites.
The OCC plays music that is perfect for listening. dancing, or background music. Their instrumentation consists of clarinet, mandolin, 7 string guitar, and pandeiro (Brazilian tamborine). Come listen, you'll have a great time. For Choro!
Choro (Shor'ou)
An instrumental music style began in the middle 19th century Rio de Janeiro, Brazil known as choro. This music was Brazilian interpretations of popular European dance music (waltz, polka, mazurka, march) as well as Brazilian hybrid styles (lundu, maxixé, and tango), a mixture of African and European elements. Although compared to ragtime, dixieland, jazz, classical music, and calypso, choro stands uniquely Brazilian.
Today, while retaining its roots, choro is given credit for influencing the essential Brazilian music styles samba and bossa nova. A national treasure of Brazil, the choro tradition continues through a revival, not only in Brazil, but also in parts of the United States, Europe, and Japan.
